The hulking flat black all-terrain vehicle practically consumed the road as Batman pursued Two-face and his goons. Everything was coming to fruition when without warning the second car braked hard and spun to the left, stretching across Batman’s path. The Batmobile took the hit solidly. It’s near impenetrable exterior digs into the sedan and spitting the gas tank wide apart. The scrape of metal sent enough sparks to ignite the fumes and a 3 ton hulk of Batman and mobile were overturned from the direct undercarriage blast. Gloved fingers worked the restraints, dropping from his upside-down position and onto the ceiling. Lights flashed over him as he crawled from the car. The high-pitched whine of an engine and the thunderous chopping of a helicopter’s prop met his ears. Eyes squinted into slits as he peered up to the white light that was blinding him briefly. His cape was smoldered, but the body armor was still untouched. Without a pause in step he strode to the edge of the bridge and leapt. His cape flung out on either side, catching the updraft in tandem with his grapple hook’s assistance as he swung to the water’s edge and then to the Rooftop of a waterfront property.
Two-Face had escaped. That mistake cut deep. He’d grown soft and in part he knew that it was Grayson’s abduction that had helped dampen his determination. Bruce had grown too fond of the boy. It was hard to fault him the weakness. Dick was near everything he’d been at his age. They had mirrored pain, were at peak athletics, an obsession to the job. Eyes closed as he reached inward and found his center. There were so many different paths that could have been walked. He could have taken up the thread of his father’s life and become a doctor. He could have fallen into a darker path of alcoholism or drug abuse, but he’d had Alfred to keep him focused, just as Dick had him. Now aside from his estranged family all he had was a vow. His eyes snapped open as the police scanner in his cowl’s earpiece crackled to life; an explosion on the Old City Pier. He could see the yellow glow about a half a mile away from him against the river. His form moved quickly to investigate, landing on the roof of a warehouse about fifty yard off from the explosion. Gloved hands removed a pair of binoculars from his belt, bringing them to his face as he took a closer look.

The Joker continued to idly shuffle the cards as he watched the chaos beneath him ensue, and the police running down the street trying to find him. He giggled as he watched them, how stupid were the cops in this town?, not that he was complaining. As he watched he saw the Bat approaching and dove to the ground for a moment.
"hehehehehehe..."
after a moment he stood back up and looked around, he could still hear the sirens and people screaming. Looking at the rooftop across the street he saw Batman looking through binoculars at the chaos......
"Yoo Hoo! Batsy!" The Joker shouted as he waved.
Once he had the bats attention he reached into the bag and pulled out the last of his marbles, throwing them as hard as he could across the street. The majority of them collided against one another in the air and against the building, filling the sky with bedlam and rubble.
"Fast as fast can me! You'll never catch me! hehehehehe" he yelled as he began to run and leap to the next building.
"Guess I've really lost my marbles now. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

A new face had made its play on Gotham- a smiling grotesque with pallid skin and shocking green hair. The grin that taunted him was wide and fierce. Batman could only imagine the duality of humor and horror that smile had wrecked upon its victims. He reacted to the taunting catcall of the Joker, diving from the rooftop to repel onto the adjacent building. The chase had once again begun. Like the thundering of his heartbeat, the echo of his footfalls fueled his muscles toward the chase. The Joker was on the run, his sadistic laughter more than enough evidence for Batman that the thing he chased had lost its humanity a long time ago. He understood how Gotham’s ravages could peel away the fabric of a man’s sanity, that many of the law enforcement regarded him in the same light as the criminals he’d offered the city’s hungry prisons and asylums.
As he ran his hand came to his grapnel gun. With a ‘foomph’ the air pressure was released and the projectile shot toward the Joker’s leg, wrapping itself about his thigh in mid-air. Gloved hands took up the slack and he pulled, wrenching the Joker’s flight grounded. The satisfying smack of flesh to solid ground made the Caped Crusader wonder what vital parts he’d managed to break, but it was unimportant. Batman was finished playing nice. With one hand still on the line, he closed the gap. His huge figure blanketed out the night sky as he hulked over the fallen criminal. “…And you’ve gained a prison sentence.” He taunted back, reaching into his utility belt for a pair of cuffs.
A gloved hand depressed a homing beacon on his belt, and the Batmobile sprang to life. Lights flickered on inside and its gears began to work. It disengaged itself from the crushed getaway car and quickly navigated the rain-slicked streets of Gotham. With a roar of the engines the oversized monstrosity turned into the narrow alley between the buildings and waited; its engines idling with a thunderous resonation. Before long, Joker was cuffed at the back, and tied about with the heavy metal thread cord. His body, Batman left dangling before the twin doors of the 12th precinct with an explanatory note pinned to his lapel..

The Joker hit the ground hard, slowly rolling over he looked directly at the bat as he hovered over him menacingly. Well the first round was over. He put up no fight as Batman took him to the police station. Soon he was in a waiting cell, doing whaat one who does. Waiting. He didn't say much to anyone at the station, he only told them to call him the Joker. No name, no family no anything.
"Anything to say for yourself?" an officer asked him.
The Joker simply looked at him and grinned widely.
"Any remorse?"
"Why of course, theres so much more I could have done if you'd let me. hehehehehehehehehe" he retorted as the officer walked away.
He knew where he would be heading, Arkham Asylum awaited him. He had heard stories about it, lunatics crammed close to one another, villianous minds all plotting aganist everything. He smiled at the thought, he could use a vacation.
**************THE NEXT MORNING****************
He was guided through the doors of Arkham, a smile on his face the whole time. He already had ideas of what he should do, but he would bide his time. After all, he had the feeling that the bat would be around for a LONG time. As he was processed into the "network" he looked around. The place seemed close to home for him. He could tell that he would make friends here. They began to take him to his cell when someone caught his eye. One of the Doctors, a blonde, she was simply stunning. They made eye contact for a brief moment and the Joker smiled. Not a horrid frighteningly smile, but a smile like you would give a new friend.
Inside of his cell he pulled aganist the strait jacket. One of the guards mockingly slid a deck of cards through the slot in the door. "hehehehehe. Thank you SIR! hehehehehehe." he slid on the ground over to the deck and opened it with his feet, he sighed slightly as he began to play solitair with his feet.
"This is SO, exactly what i needed."

In Harleen’s opinion, Arkham was a tedious place. Granted she wanted to do this with all her heart, but sometimes… she just felt at odds with the other doctors here. A sigh escaped the blondes lips as she wrote down random things about John Rainer who sat before her. A slight nod here and there as she listened to the convicted murderer go on and on about how he was physically abused as a child and how it scarred him for life.
“So you think the fact that your baby sitter used to put you in the corner when you broke things caused you to snap?” She shook her head slightly yet continued to write things down randomly.
The patient seems to have a false sense of right and wrong. He doesn’t realize a small punishment in his past was not what caused him to snap but a deeper more psychological thing. Perhaps trying hypnotism might work on the patient.
Reasoning for the hypnotism is to see if there is anything deeper in his past that he might not be able to remember. Abuse, a murder, sexual abuse, Anything.
She listened more and more about his past dealings. Her head shook slightly as she blinked at his last comment. ”I used to kill animals when I was younger. It gave me a rush. I would bury them in my backyard to see if they would come back to life… like in Pet Cemetery. I know it’s weird, but to have a zombie cat would be awesome. One time I swear I saw the Doberman I strangled the next week. But when I dug up the dog, the corpse had maggots in it and was still there.” Harleen looked at him then her watch. Time was, thankfully, almost up.
Her pen moved some more, quickly as she eyed her patient. Patient Classification: Sociopath. He doesn’t understand the killing of animals and humans a like are wrong. Keep from scary movies. He thinks movies that are ‘pagan’ in beliefs-as in Zombies, Vampires, Etc. are real. Continue to under supervision as he watches television. As she wrote her eyes never left her patient. Then she stood and knocked on the door.
“Alright Jonathon. Time is up, I will see you in two days.” Her New Englander accent was thick as she spoke and smiled to the murderer in front of her. However it took a few moments for the security guard to let her out. As she waited, she watched John stand and sit four times. She whipped out her pen and jotted one more thing down before finally getting out of the cell. Patient John R. exhibits OCD qualities of sitting and standing in the same spot for numerous times. Patient also taps on his bed fifteen times between thoughts. She smirked slightly-you had to have some sort of OCD to point out other OCD behaviors.
Stepping out into the hall, her blue orbs fell on the security guards who were joking about something. “Something funny guys?” Her brow rose gently, flirtatiously at that to get her answer.
“Oh yeah doll… we got a new prisoner. A real… funny guy.” The two cops busted out laughing as her face sneered at the name ‘doll’. “Bats finally caught the Joker with the boys in blue… he’s four cells over.” Her eyes rolled slightly before she diverted her attention to the newly lit cell.
Slender legs moved in heels that clicked as she passed the Joker’s cell. A brow rose gently as she saw his eyes quickly raise to her own. There was something about him that made her skin crawl, yet her heart breathe at the same time. Taking a gulp she quickly walked passed and to her administrators office, where she knocked and waited for an answer.
“Come in.” the female voice of Dr. Moreen Leeland echoed from inside. Harleen did just that as she sat down before her superior. “What can I do for you Harleen?” the doctor asked coolly as she looked over the blonde’s features.
“I would like to study and work with the Joker.” Harleen’s voice was quiet and very professional as she talked with her boss.
“I do not know, Harleen. He has been known to screw with females-and well we wouldn’t want to loose a fine doctor such as yourself because of him, now would we?” She smiled sweetly at Harleen who just shook her head defiantly. “Alright, let me talk with the board of directors, you have… after all, been making great leaps and bounds with your other patients, perhaps it would be good for you to have a high profile criminal.” With that Harleen nodded and exited after a small discussion on John Rainer and the upcoming weekend.
~~~
Next Monday came quickly for Harleen as she moved into her office. A note was on a large manila folder which read. You have your wish, Harleen… but watch out for him. Good Luck – Dr. Moreen Leeland. A huge smile came over her face before she sat down and cleared her schedule. She always made a two hour block for new patients. However she also needed another two hours to go over his large case file. A deep breath was taken before she stood and grabbed some coffee.
Black coffee and a new case file was all she needed for a good day-yet as she went through the large case file… the more her skin began to bump and cool at any bit of wind. He had a dark history, and possibly a darker past to create such a foul man. The hair upon her neck made her body jitter slightly as they stood and tickled her. Freaked was so beyond what she would normally call herself at this point in time.
After a few moments she sat, file on desk, and her eyes open wide. Picking up the phone she made a quick phone call to have the Joker placed in restraints before she got there in five minutes. As the phone clicked, her body heaved a sigh and she swigged her coffee one last time before standing file in hand and leaving the room she happily called her office.
Within a few moments she was down the hall and in front of the Joker’s cell. He was in a straight jacket staring straight at her. She took a deep breath before rounding the corner and entering his cell. Sitting in the designated corner seat that had been placed in his cell, she crossed her legs and took out a pen, looking at the Joker and smiling.
“Hello, I see you only answer to Joker… so hello Joker, I am Dr. Harleen Quinzel, you can talk to me about anything. I’m here to listen.”
As The Joker sat on the floor playing cards with his feet he hears someone walking down the hall.....high heels....somehow he already knew who it was. He watched her as she looked at him through the opening, she hesitated, seemingly nervous to come in. He laughed at this to himself. After all he was harmless........sometimes.
She entered the room and sat in the corner away from him. She introduced herself.... "hehehehehe Whats up doc?" he said with a smile.....after a moment his laughter subsided and he looked into her eyes.
"Harleen Quinzel.....a regluar Harley Quinn." He smiled at her, a friendly smile.
"Well if you're here to listen you may have your work cut out for you. My life is an interesting story, sometimes it goes one way sometimes another....there are somethings which remain a constant though. You'll see that thought." he leaned back and looked at her for a long moment, as if waiting for her to ask a question.
Eyes stared at the man before her. Something was enchanting about him, her brow rose ”Harleen Quinzel, a regular Harley Quinn.” then a friendly smile came from him. She melted slightly but didn’t let it show, she just let out a slight sigh.
“I suppose you’re right, my name does sound like that…” blue eyes shined towards the man on the opposite side of the room.
Well if you're here to listen you may have your work cut out for you. My life is an interesting story, sometimes it goes one way sometimes another....there are something’s which remain a constant though. You'll see that thought." She nodded of course and wrote a few things down in the folder, eyeing him over the side, eyes sparkling.
“Like I said, I’m here to listen, which means everything Joker… so anything you would like to talk about… my ears are open. Today is a two hour session, so you have my attention for a full two hours.” She smiled reassuringly and nodded. Eyes followed him rocking, eyeing the cards in his toes, she stifled a laugh and rose a brow. “So… you know how to play cards…. With your feet. Is this something you learned through your years? Or is it a way to hide from something, doing weird things?”
Eyes rose to his level and she looked very stoic. “Tell me about your childhood maybe?”
The Joker smiled once again.
"Playing cards with my feet....well it helps me pass the time, after all my hands are kinda busy at the moment. hehehehehe."
He rocked back and forth a little bit, still playing cards, but looking at the doctor, amazingly still putting the right cards down.
He looked at her when she asked about his childhood....and he dropped the cards in his feet. He stopped rocking and seemed to go deep into thought.
"Suprisingle I had an average childhood. I mean, the alcholic mother, the drugged father, the cross dressing uncle. Kinda like the brady bunch i suppose. Only instead of brothers and sisters i had, well...none. heh. I remember when mom left us........after trying to kill me......she always loved that damn dog more than me."
He thought of his mother trying to kill him. He had just taken a drill to her little puppy, and she began to chase him with a steak knife, then dad came home from work at the construction site. He swiftly beat her with a hammer for trying to hurt his son.
"The dog made a mess in the basement, and you kno what? SHe tried to blame it on me! Dad came home, and well....he took care of her. You should have seen his face when I told the judge he killed mom for no reason.....hehehe."
The Joker seemed to get depressed for a long moment, "Other than a few fleeting memories i don't remembe rmuch before I became like this.....before the Batman." His head hung low.
"I was married once, i think......But she died, freak accident involving a baby bottle heater..... I......I wanted to move us out of Gotham. Into a better place, maybe Metroplis......I was going to help some guys break into the chemical plant I used to work at.....new security showed up and chased us into the PLaying Card company next door. Somehow we got back into the chemical plant, then the bat showed up.....He ruthlessly threw me into a vat of chemicals. When i got out i saw what i looked like. hehehehehehehe, guess its kinda funny...well then again everythin kinda is..."
He cleared his throat, looking back up at her. "WHen I got home i saw my aparptment on fire, and someone standing in the ally looking up at it. At her funeral, i couldn't get close given my recent beautiful makeover.....but i saw the same person there.....i wonder who he is...."
The Joker picked up the crds with his feet again and began to play. "Would you care to join me for a game?........." He slowly stod up, puicking up the deck with his feet he put it on the table.
"blackjacks the game. and of course, Jokers Wild." he effortlessly took his arms out from behind the straightjacked and began to shuffle. "hehehe"
You could pretty much say the party was a bust, well in the end. After the baddies left with what personables everyone felt they still deserved back, the room began to teeter. She had turned away from the door way when the Bat and the others left and began to help others to their feet. Of course after a moment she remember a bit of something and reaching into the nice little compartment she had made herself for specific purposes. She removed the small beautiful diamond studded earrings and looked them over with a small grin. "Why hello my little darlings...safe and sound....like hell you were going to the big bad man and his freaks of nature." Clipping them back onto her ears she looked about the room.
Some people were scampering to go home, others were still sitting in shock and others well, were freaking out like there was no tomorrow. None made it through the doors though, to scared to leave this place. Shaking her head just a bit Selina began to walk back towards Leslie. Stopping once or twice to give a hand and help some old aristocratic rich woman off the floor and onto her feet. "Everyone Ok?" she asked suddenly as Leslie smiled and nodded.
"Of course Selina Hun. You can't keep me down you should know that." Selina smiled a bit, how she loved Leslie. No matter how hard times got Leslie was always looking to the bright side. She then noticed Miss Chase not far away and moved towards the blonde woman. " You know who that man was?" she asked suddenly before looking about the room once more to make sure everyone was doing well. "He looked familiar..oddly enough. Someones missing.." her voice was lower as she peered around and in walked Alfred to tend to calming everyone down and making sure everything was back the way it was.
Then she noticed the man she had escorted here crawling out from under a table and pushing someone aside as he stood. She hoped he didn't notice her but of course he did and he made his way towards her. "Darling not even a scratch on your pretty face!" Selina could only nod slowly to his words. Ok, so she had to play along if she was going to get what she wanted. "Let us get out of this dump. There is way to much happening for me to like." a slight sigh came from her lips before they were walking towards where many others had gone, towards the exit. "You need help getting home safely Leslie?" she felt the tug at her arm and pulled back herself with a glare towards the impatient man. " No Selina hun. I'll manage don't worry about me." and slight smile and another nudge towards the man who seemed so impatient, she took her coat and placed it on just as the cops showed up and ran into the room. But all the men they were looking for were long gone. They did their policely things and soon enough Selina was let go along with the gentleman she was with.
Upoin arriving at his high rise condo, the smell of alcohol and food disturbing her all the way, she followg him up towards his apartment. The night drew longer than she hoped, he had quite the energy but she had more. Finally he was asleep on his sheets and she was redressing. Clipping back on those beautiful gems. She looked at the picture of his darling wife and their kids sitting right there on the nightstand on her side. Finally she was done up, shoes were replaced and she looked about the room quickly. This life was beginning to become a huge bummer for her. Then she spotted what she was looking for, a small box on the dresser. Opening it up she saw the most beautiful jelwery in the world. She would remember this place. She had a plan of her own tonight. Leaving a note. "Took what you owe me from your wallet, hope you don't mind hun, but I got to eat. Next time you need another one you know where I am at. Your little Kitten, Selina." ok so that was the most disgusting night of her life but hey, for now before she was big it was her living.
Exiting the apartment, she was downstairs in no time and a taxi was waved. She returned to her apartment and upon opening the door was flooded at her feet but purring furballs rubbing against he ankles. With a laugh she smiled to each of them. "You guys are going to trip me!..hah I missed you all to. Mummy's home." throwing her coat aside and moving to the bedroom to change into something night she looked back at the cats that layed around the place, most on her bed. " You guys are my inspiration...soon everyone is going to remember a cat..and soon we are going to rich beyond belief." with a small laugh she set to work. The night was even longer as she sewed material together, leather and spandex. She was creating something more maginificant than she could imagine and she would not stop until it was done.
Notes were written and her eyes jumped from paper to the Joker, back and forth. She listened ever so intently to his non-sensicle words before he began to speak about his child hood. What a difficult life, however….
Patient seemed to always have derangement. Father went to jail on his word. Patient denies his past life through making this one… memorable. Claims he does not remember the past, but recounts his past easily, although falls into states of silence, seemingly remembering more but will not say.
Blue orbs looked up and he was staring at her. He was talking about his past again, and her neck cracked as she craned it to a questioning look.
Patient was once married. Look for Chemical Incident, Apartment Fire, Batman. She was determined to find out who he truly was, whether he liked it or not… she needed to know. See if name matches up with child put in foster care after mother was killed by father and father sent to jail. Only child. She was rambling in her notes, but she was making them clear at the same time.
”I saw the same person there.....i wonder who he is...." the sentence caught her attention and she glanced up. There was true sadness in his eyes, and the feeling of betrayal. Maybe he thought his wife was cheating on him? She didn’t know, nor want to.
Then he stood and neared her with the deck. Her neck craned again before he undid his bindings and smiled. "Would you care to join me for a game? Blackjacks the game, and of course, Jokers Wild.”
Eyes widened but, she wasn’t afraid. Her eyes snapped towards the door which quickly opened but she put her hand out and stopped the guard in his tracks. She wasn’t afraid. ”Hehehehe….” That’s when something snapped and she smiled looking at him, blue eyes sparkling for the first time in a long time.
“Sure…. I’ll play ya.” Her accent was thick, doll-like… it was as if she was some ‘greasers’ girl talking with gum in her mouth and twirling her hair… she fell back into a comfortable way, a way she was in highschool. She hadn’t felt so real… in a long time.
As the guard swung the door open the Joker looked anxious for a moment until Harley said she would play Blackjack with him. He swiftly began to shuffle the cards, using one hand cuts and other mild shuffle tricks. Then he delt, each of them got a face down card, then perhaps not suprisingly each got a joker.
" Well how do ya like that?" he said with a slight chuckle, knowing very well that he had the king of hearts and she had the queen. It was a small trick, but it would work after all, so he thought.
His eyes darted to the guard then to the doctor. He liked this one, maybe he would bring her with him when he escaped.
" What'll it be doll? hit or stand?" His green eyes looked deeply into hers, he loved the accent she had. She would be his, somehow.
