Wash sighed this wasn’t going over how he saw it in his mind. With River going on and on about Starling staying. It was starting to sound a bit desperate. His face turned back towards River after Simon’s little lecture to her, placing his hands on his waist. “ River you’ve got to give me something more that that. Were pretty full up. We got a Captian. First mate, pilot,me, mechanic, docotor, brute, crazy. See all booked. Oh and a preacher.” “Don’t call her crazy.” “All right, sorry. Just making a point. Mal’s not just going to let some stranger on the boat.”
Simon went into brother protector mode, but he also opened his mouth up saying things he should have. Wash’s brows narrowed towards the good doctor and he moved closer. “Simon, did you go stupid?! You don’t know who’s listening.” Simon shot a glare back to the pilot as he moved in front of her sister. “What I’m not afraid of them.” “You twit, can’t be rudding spouting things like that. When Mal finds out.” “He won’t.” Wash crossed his arms over his chest when he felt the push from behind him so he was out of the way. They’d come back, and Mal had heard ever word. There wasn’t any explanation or as his shirt was grabbed and he was nearly dragged away. “This is how you handle things?” “What I can’t control what comes out of Simon’s mouth, unless you wanted me to put my boot in it.” “Yeah, maybe I did!” Wash blinked looking at Mal, then was released as he went storming back. His eyes sought out his wife and he went to her side. “You can keep your gorram job. I don’t ever want it. I'll just stick to being the pilot thank you. Just go about my simple life. With simple goals. Fly a ship. Check. Protect Wife. Check. Live happy life. Check. Make little wash babies...top of my to-do list.”
He didn’t get much time with his wife, as Kaylee came rushing up calling for Mal. In turn Mal called Zoe to fill his place as he was lead off back to the yard, Wash had left Kaylee rummaging in. Brow furrowed as he wondered what was up. He tired to pay attention to the things round him. When he went to help Simon up, he jerked away. “Don’t touch me.” “You brought that on yourself.” He glanced up and looked down the way to see the interaction. Mal pulling Kaylee away, talking then shaking the hand of the man, only to be seconds later smothered in a hug by the young mechanic.

Wow this girl was sure persistant. But why? Starling never did anything for her, never helped her out, heck they only met a few moments prior to this. Why did River want her to stay so badly? And through it all, what was she talking about with the whole they won't see yet not yet. It was all just a bit to confusing to be honest. Next time, she's staying in her keep, and not interacting with anyone.
"Pleasure meeting you Wash, and I'll take that as a point taken. Oh and well...not that i'm trying to meld in onto your little crew or anything but you might find this handy." she smiled brightly at him before rummaging through her sack of little toys and stuff. Finally she pulled out a think cylinder and smiled brightly at the yellowishly clear substance. "This is a diluted form of Elaeis guineensis. All in all with a cup it can make your fuel last longer...say about maybe a day to a week depending on the type of fuel you get. Cheaper than filling up to much I'd say and a good substitute. It tastes good too" she put a bit on her finger and licked it off before smiling even more. "Think of this as a thank you for your friend here helping me out." This was becoming more than she could chew. As she was about to speak some young man came up asking what was going on. Starling gave a slightly curious look, like this was all just some big mistake. Yeah, no one ever wanted her around so maybe this girl was just confused on who she was. Maybe River thought she was someone she wasn't right?
Wash suddenly answered the mans words and Starling just nodded in agreement with them. "Yeah you don't need to thank me..considering she's the one that found me. And helped me out of a bit of a spot back there, I thank her ." Then came the explination of River and why she was interesting which in the end was rather interesting as well. Nodding slowly to Wash before Simon cut in, her brows raised and she looked a bit shocked. "You poor girl..." she whispered gently. And then the girl was lectured and Starling raised her hands. "Oh..really I didn't know she wanted me to come along. I mean, I'm not one to intrude so taking me is really out of the question I should think. Besides...you don't know me." But the girl broke down, tears coming into her eyes, like some small child. Starling felt bad and pushed past Simon to give the girl a hug. "Well, you aren't so broken now I think. No, I think with a little time you will be good as new." ok so Womens intuition and compassion can make you do strange things sometimes.
But the happy little grouping was a bit interrupted. Suddenly some man just came waltzing in and punched this Simon straight in the jaw. Wide eyed and shocked Starling cringed a bit and stepped back as the man came to speak to her. She didn't want to get hit for some reason to. But before she could open her mouth a woman took his place and she had to answer to her. And when she tried to back away from it all nervously of course, a rather larger man was behind her. Causing her head to turn and look at him with a slight smile before she put her attentions on the woman. "Alliance schools.....oh they wack jobs? Nothing good comes outta there, everyone in the scientific community knows that. And besides..I have nothing against you all. Honestly, I don't want any trouble myself so I'm not about to start trouble for others. Promise.." she put her hand over her chest. How she got herself into this only the high beings know.

Instantly when her tears began to fall, she felt Starling hug her tightly. She tensed slightly before letting herself relax into the embrace. She cried slightly. "You poor girl..." Starling whispered gently before whispering something into her ear. "Well, you aren't so broken now I think. No, I think with a little time you will be good as new." River’s wet eyes looked towards the pretty blonde and she smiled some.
The dark eyes of the woman-child widened and she turned just in time to see Mal hit her brother. “No touching bad man, mean!” She eyed her brother who was on the ground, and the man who tried to help him up.
“Don’t touch me.” Simon spat towards Wash, and Wash pulled away.
“You brought that on yourself.” Wash stated calmly.
However by now, River was back on Starling, staring and smiling. “Little star must stay… your secret will help us all… and we will help you.” She smiled some before pulling away and looking up some, only to see Mal and Kaylee bringing a strange blonde on board. However, River looked back to this man and then back to Starling.
Starlings comments about the Alliance made River’s eyes widen and her mind flash back. “One, two, hands of blue… one two hands of blue.” Simon ran to her quickly and began to pet her gently.
“River, shhh everything’s ok, you’re with me now. It’s Simon.” River’s eyes slowly closed and she curled into the protective holdings of Simon. A sigh escaped before she slowly opened her eyes and pulled herself away from her elder brother.
“A ge, Starling must stay.” She said once more, however she said that towards her brother, before walking off towards the room she knew as her own and Simons.
There was something about this new man she did not like… “beautiful blonde will betray us all…” she quoted once more as she left the room-so quiet it was barely audible.

There was bantering between the two for a moment until Fox interjected once again, trying to sweeten the deal even more. Kaylee blinked, anything she could find in that yard. Eyes trailed over the yard. Wasn’t much, but a few good treasures would keep the Serenity in the air and flying. Gaze went back towards Mal as he moved away and motioned her to come away a few feet to discuss in private. Kaylee’s hands went to her hips as they discussed. When Mal hung is head at what she’d said she felt bad and patted his hair. “Aw…there there, Captain. I didn’t mean it like that.” “Regardless you’re right; on both counts.”
Mal went back and looked the man up and down before saying his own piece of mind about taking him on. Kaylee watched. She knew how much he cared for the ship, and for his crew. Well maybe not as much for Simon, but Mal cared, even if he didn’t ever openly say anything about it. It was just little things he did. A bright smile pulled against her lips as he turned back around to her. “Scrounge away, my little Kaylee.” “Really Captain?” When Mal nodded her eyes seemed to twinkle and she moved up closer throwing her arms tightly around his neck in a huge hug. Finally she pulled back still with a smile on her face.
She took a glance at Fox, sure it would be nice to have help from a good looking guy, but currently she was more excited for the parts for the ship. “I have to go get Wash and the Mule.” She backed up knocking into some people as she went from the crowded streets of the Eavesdown Docks. She gave them sorries and headed up the hatch, where it looked like they were still trying to figure something out with a woman standing there. Her brow quirked. Then looked at the small container of stuff she’d given Wash and took it from him. “Hey, oh Kaylee…” “Wow, I haven’t seen anything like this before. Much better than what I try to do anyway. Come, on Wash I need you and the Mule to bring back the stabilizer I found and any good part I can get my hands on. Oh, bring the fuel cells too we can fill them up.”
Wash had looked at her a bit bewildered but didn’t put up too much fuss, and the pair rode back to where the shop was. The junkyard looked more of a mess when she was done with it. Finding as many good pieces that could be found in a place like that. With everything loaded on the mule, and with their fuel cells full they headed back, with Fox walking behind. Once in the bay, Kaylee hopped off the mule and grabbed one end of the stabilizer, and called over to Fox. “Grab that other end, I want to get this baby in soon as I can. And dump that rutting broken one out.” Kaylee probably talked his ear off by the time they reached the engine room and she grabbed the needed tools to get to work. Hand patted the ship. “Been rough on you girl, it’s ok. I’ve got you some shiney new parts. I’ll fix you up pretty.”

Fox tried to listen to what they were carrying on about. From what he understood there was something shady in the Captain’s past dealings. Then again who didn’t have their shady moments. His life was full a gray. He just had to be patient and wait. Hope it would pay off too. His weight shifted as he looked through the yard then back up as the Captain was in front of him. “Well then, consider me warned.” He was on with the crew now. He smirked slightly as moved to get out of Kaylee’s way when she turned and hugged the captain instead. He scratched the stubble on his chin as she moved away knocking people over in her excitement.
Watching her go his arms folded over his chest and he leaned slightly to his side where Mal was still standing. “Kinda infectious ain’t she, get under your skin kind of infectious. Cute lil bug too.” He turned his head some to see what kind of reaction he would have, after seeing the look on his face when the young girl had hugged him. The moment with the captain didn’t last long as the young mechanic had come back with the pilot once again and a wheeler to load things up on.
Tucker shifted as Kaylee moved pass him to dive into the junk heaps to find any part she could. He knew after they left the rest of this would be scrounged away in any case. The body found. Rightly, he didn’t care. He’d done what he’d set out to do, and that was to get on the Serenity. However he was slightly intrigued with Kaylee, and the relationship between her and the Captain. The back of his mind started spinning with thought as he walked through a small path to where he’d had a pack of stuff ready slinging it over his shoulder. When he got back, some compressors where placed in his arms. And they loaded up. He looked up towards the Captain. “Ain’t I special enough to ride on that thing?” “No.”
Fox muttered under his breath as he followed behind, coughing and the initial dust could that flew in his face. Once on board he set the compressors down and dropped the sack off his shoulder. Some guy and his sister were walking away and she had looked at him. For a moment he had a weird feeling, but when Kaylee called him he turned doing as he was told. Leaning over it some he smiled towards her. “Names, Fox. Fox Tucker.” “Well now. F. Tucker huh? You drop the T and you got Fucker.” “Don’t mind him, that’s Jayne. And I’m Kaylee.” He lifted his end as they started back to make their way to the engine room. She kept asking him questions. Had he ever been on a Firefly before. No. Flown. Yes. So on and so forth.
Kaylee had settled in to start fixing the grav-stablizer, talking to the ship as she went. Muscles tensed as he held the new stabilizer up in place as it was fastened, so it wouldn’t fall down on the girl. “How long you been doin’ this.” “Oh, since I can remember. I use to find old things and fix them up when I was a kid. So how come you wanted off so bad.” “It’s personal, Darling.” “I’m sure other ships had landed ‘fore us.” “As you can tell, most people ain't keen on taking on new folk. Maybe I was just waitin’ for the right crew to come along. Wasn’t expecting women on it though.” “Oh don’t let me fool you. I can fix this boat good as any. And Zoe, she’s like a warrior woman or somethin’” “An how ‘bout you and the Captain. A man would have to be blind or right stupid to ignore someone pretty as you.” Fox saw her blush as she asked for another tool that was by his boot. He handed it over with a smile.

Wash always tried to be a voice of reason, but he thought Simon would have known better. After all this time. Maybe he was just stressed. Hell, they all were. No play, all work. His brows arched once again towards his hairline as Starling handed him a small container of a strange substance. “Uh, thanks? Taste, I don’t think I’d be hungry enough to try it. But if you have anything to spice up a protein packet.” He smiled toward the young woman. Mal was off doing his thing with Kaylee, more than likely negotiations. So it left his wife, Zoe, to handle the young woman. With Jayne being intimidating behind her.
Hands moved the container back and forth for a moment until it was snatched from his hands. “Hey, oh Kaylee…” “Wow, I haven’t seen anything like this before. Much better than what I try to do anyway. Come, on Wash I need you and the Mule to bring back the stabilizer I found and any good part I can get my hands on. Oh, bring the fuel cells too we can fill them up.” Blinking a few times he remouthed what was just said to him, trying to make sure he was hearing things correctly. Maybe this was gearing up to be their lucky day. Or a very interesting one. He was thinking the later of the two. Gearing up he started the mule and headed out. Suddenly he had the feeling that interesting was going to be far less way of describing the day.
After the fuel cells were filled, and the mule loaded up he got back behind the stearing as Kaylee piled on, as well as Malcolm right next to him. “Ain’t I special enough to ride on that thing?” “No.” Wash gave a quizzical look towards Mal and the blonde as he started back through the populated streets to the Serenity. He didn’t dare ask though hearing the muttered curses in Chinese from the Captain’s lips as he pulled into the bay. Kaylee was already starting off to work with the new guy who introduced himself as Fox Tucker, with Jayne making an off comment. Forearms folded over the handles of the mule. “We’ll Jayne, nice to see you found your sense of humor today of all days. " "What's that supposed to mean?"

She knew her job well enough to know that it was a tough position to maintain without losing it. Wash certainly had his hands full in the interim while they had been meeting with Badger, and by the time she was briefed on what was going on Zoë was certain that her husband’s occasional curiosity to occasionally take up her slack was null and void.
“You can keep your gorram job. I don’t ever want it. I'll just stick to being the pilot thank you. Just go about my simple life. With simple goals. Fly a ship. Check. Protect Wife. Check. Live happy life. Check. Make little wash babies...top of my to-do list.” “You remember me promising not to say ‘I told you so’?” Zoë joked, her lips curling into a broad smile. She stopped there, knowing that the tenor of the conversation couldn’t be terribly light. The newcomer had become privy to far too much knowledge and it was her job to see to it that they could either trust her, or find a creative way of keeping their secret. But Zoë was also aware that River was very good at knowing how to read someone.
Mal and she had already discussed her in the past, especially after the incident with Early, but they weren’t altogether settled about whether or not River was in fact a psychic or not. Some of her intuitiveness could be chalked up to her genius; the other to luck… but one thing Zoe was pretty sure about in this situation was that the girl wouldn’t be so eager to have Starling on board if she had seen something ill about her.
“I’m not sure why River decided to go off ship and seek you out, or why she’s so eager to have you bunk with us, but I am reasonably confident that you are right now holding onto more intimate knowledge about her Alliance troubles than I would like. So until I and the captain are one hundred percent confident that you are going to keep that knowledge to yourself, I’m afraid the choice of you staying or going has been taken out of your hands. Now, why don’t you go down into the mess and see about getting a bite to eat while we decide where you’re to sleep.”

It wasn’t hard, letting Kaylee have her way when it came to a hard-pressed topic. Just thinking about her gave Mal a tightness in his chest that overwhelmed his senses. And even though this new passenger didn’t sit well with him, he gave her the benefit of the doubt. Serenity could use the parts and the fuel, and he thought perhaps that part of his reservations about Tucker were personal. He just couldn’t grin and bear it when another man was sizing up Kaylee like she was a piece of prime rib. “Go on…. I’ll just get myself acquainted with our new crewmate!” mal slapped Fox across his shoulders (perhaps a little too rough) mocking a smile on his face and speaking though his smile to Fox. “You hurt her, I’ll kill you.”
Mal eyed him up, working to gather the heavier of the items Kaylee had picked out. Wiping sweat from his brow with the rag from his back pocket, the captain looked up as the Mule came bumbling down the narrow driveway. Muscles flexed and he hefted things up and onto the floating transport his eyes focused on the task at hand instead of the internal conflict that was waging war in his mind. The ride back he sat in silence, not wanting to listen to the two babbling on and on. It was hard enough to keep River safe without adding more people to the equation…
As they rode in Zoë closed the hatch doors, sealing off the daylight. Mal leapt from the mule and began to unload the parts, nodding to Jayne that he should lend a hand. As they all chipped in he began to unveil the latest. “Alright I want you all to meet Fox Tucker. He’s going to be riding along with us till we get to our next drop point. Ya’ll can thank him for the refuel and these here parts for Serenity. As for the job that we were hired to do, I hope you don’t mind a brief layover ‘for we get you to your destination.” Mal sized up Tucker then looked back over the rest of the crew. “Our job is on Bernadette. Badger should be dropping off our package wthin a few hours so in the meantime I want to get this boat in order. Kaylee. You make good with these new parts; but first get the grav-stablizer up and running. Wash, you get our coordinates programmed, Jayne, Zoë… you get to swap out the fuel cells. I will be-” “Captain,” Zoë interrupted. He paused, looking over to her and wondering why she was questioning his orders. “You might want to go into the mess and see about getting our other passenger a place to sleep." “Other passenger… Oh no, no, no… ” he muttered pivoting to head in that direction before Zoë’s hand gripped his shoulder. “Sir, I think it’s wise you let her stay on… River was very adamant about it.” Mal’s brow quirked, “is that a fact…” the sardonic tone was hard to miss.

He loved how his wife could handle a situation. For a while he’d been jealous about it. Maybe even a little hard edged, especially around both her and Mal. They had history. After his and Mal’s incident he’d moved on some. Still kept it in the back of his mind. Mal however had become more of his brother. Kept him alive then. Wash turned to hear Mal speaking after arriving back. “Captain, You might want to go into the mess and see about getting our other passenger a place to sleep." “Other passenger… Oh no, no, no… ” “Sir, I think it’s wise you let her stay on… River was very adamant about it.” “Is that a fact…No way in hell... I just took on someone I didn't want and now there's another surprise? No!" “Well Cap, she can save us money... she has this weird potion stuff that makes fuel last longer..." “I don't care if with her breath she can take the gorram rust off the hull! I ain't takin’ on another, sides... where in the rutting ship do you think she'll bunk?” “In the kitchen? You know round that one section we don’t really use.” River had stopped moving and come back to where they were discussing in the hatch bay, with Simon following close behind, his jaw still a bit red where Mal had hit him. “In the med bay?” “No she cannot River”
Wash looked back up towards Mal from River and Simon. Then for a moment he caught Mal rolling his eyes. The discussion between River and Simon wasn’t quite over as the young girl piped up once again. “With us.” “And, I'm sure as hell not bunking her with Jayne...” Jayne popped his head back up from looking at everything brought on by Kaylee and Wash. “Aw, why not? I wouldn’t hurt her or nothin’.” “With Kaylee... strange man can bunk with Jayne... watch him.” Wash paced for a moment hearing footsteps coming down the metal grates. Kaylee and the new guy Fox must have finished. Carrying the broken stabilizer down with them. “With me? What? Ew, Fox can’t bunk with Jayne he’ll just have to sleep in the hammock in the engine room.” “No... someone must watch him.”
Wash couldn’t remember a time when River had been so outspoken. She was so persistent. His weigh shifted as he leaned against the side tire of the mule. Eyes looked towards Mal. He’d known him for a long time, and he knew that look in his eye. He was getting frustrated. “When did this become a topic of debate? Am I not the Captain of this here vessel?” “I think I'll take my chances with sleeping on the hammock. Don't worry lil'one. I ain't gonna do nothing.” Kaylee dusted her hands after disposing of the old stabilizer. “Yes, sir Capt'n.” “Starling must stay...”
By this time the tension was growing a bit, becoming more complicated and everyone seemed to have wanted to add their say to it. His hand moved running into his short hair as Kaylee spoke again, now looking through the things beside him. “Don't we still have Inara's pod since she's rock bound? Wait, we got space Mal. At least one more passenger room, and that tiny room end of crew bunks. Course they both been being used as storage on account we couldn’t ever fill ‘em.” “She can go as far as the next drop point. She'll stay with Kaylee, till we get one of those other rooms we been using cleaned out, and under no circumstances is anyone to bunk in Inara's pod.” “I miss her too, Captain. Especially when she did my hair up all pretty.” “That woman's bitchin' is the last thing I need to contend with right now.” “Starling must stay...”
Wash shifted his weight once again and looked over towards his wife then back. Pushing away from the mule he moved closer to Mal his voice lowered some. “Are we really sure this is wise. I mean, with the kind of trouble we get taking on passengers. The last ones we took on, never got off.” Of course anyone but the new folk would have known what Wash meant by it. With the Tam’s as fugitives, them often running or getting into trouble. Wasn’t always the best place for someone who wasn’t looking for trouble. “Should I be insulted that I've saved your lives before?” “No Simon, I wasn't insulting, Just saying. But it was because of you coming on we almost lost Kaylee. And I’ve saved your lives to you know. Like oh…flying this ship.”
“ENOUGH! Wash get us ready for when we get off the rock. Kaylee … engine room.” “Don't have to tell me twice, Cap.” “I'll be in my room, Starling your more than welcome to come and spend time with River.” Wash sighed heavily as he moved closing across the hatch and taking one more look around. Kaylee’d grabbed Fox’s hand, Simon had looked after her with a huff. Jayne seemed to ignore half of what was going on, then again, he usually did. His wife hadn’t said much and he moved by her. “So much for that simple life idea plan I had. Except for you know, that whole last part I said. I’ve been thinkin’ about it, since that whole thing with Inara’s friend. What you said. Think we ought to wait though some more, with all these changes with the boat.” Wash smiled to his wife, kissing her before he headed up the metal grate stairwell turning on one of the catwalks looking down at the hatch. If Starling wanted off it’d become clear it was a little too late for that.

Fox was sure there was a large red hand print between his shoulder blades from where the Captain had slapped him. Trying to play that part in front of Kaylee. He knew better though. There was more to it that not wanting to take him on. It was that bright eyed girl who was perky as could be and not a lick of evil in her. He hadn’t been lying when he said she was infectious. She was. Deeply. Hand ran through his long hair pushing it out of the way as she slid out from under the grav-stablizer. “Ya weren’t kidding when you said you could fix this up right pretty. I don’t think I could have even done as good a job.”
He caught the smile. It would be just getting that right hook with her. She’d be the first. Put her trust in him. The pair moved through the kitchen dining area on their way back to the hatch with the broken part and to get others. It had seemed like there was a mess of commotion going on down there. Something about their new passengers. He scowled slightly as his attention was brought up. “I’ll take my chances with the hammock. Don’t worry lil’one, I ain’t gonna do nothin’.” This went on until Malcolm ordered Kaylee back to the engine room and she gabbed his hand leading him back.
“Just barely met an already holdin’ hands. Does this mean we're sweeties?” There was hits of joking in his southern voice as Kaylee dropped his hand and sighed looking frustrated for a moment. “I didn’t mean nothin’ by it…I.” “It’s not that. I left the parts, I need a Compressor for the primary coupling link and the Reg-Converter.” “ Hows’bout I go get ‘em and you see what else you can get fixed with what’s in there.” For a moment he was surprised she agreed. But it gave him opportunity as she busied herself. The man looked around, he could hear the other voices from the rest of the crew still down in the hatch, it was the perfect time. Creeping alone he moved silently through the hallway until he found the ladder that lead down to the captains room.
Silently he slipped in, and silently he took a look around. Going through things until he came upon something interesting. A small captain’s journal. Running his thumb slightly against the tip of his tongue he opened the small journal, looking at the opened page. “Wonder what’s on this one. I wonder what could be on our captain’s mind.” He read through for a moment. Nothing useful. Scanning up a few dates and found another one. A more interesting read, but not helpful. Then there was something about Kaylee. His form leaned forward to pick through the chicken scratch writing, but suddenly he stopped. There was a sound getting closer. Fox moved closing up the journal and placing it down as he hid out of site. It seemed it had just been Wash heading up to the bridge. For a moment he held is breath making sure no one else was coming as he snuck out.
Strands of long bangs fell into his face as he looked down to the open engine room to see Kaylee’s knees in the air under another part of engine. Turning around with a confident smirk he ran a hand into his hair pushing it back. Stopping abruptly just inches from the captain’s face. If anything Mal would have seen him looking in on Kaylee, then the smirk, which quickly faded in current company. He side stepped and looked back over his shoulder to Mal as he passed, using the hand rails to skip a few metal steps down to the hatch.

Ok so all seemed to be going slightly well. Or at least better off than she was earlier. She was a bit more free now, but extremely nervous, after all what if this group decided her answer wasn't good enough and she took a walk with them? No way in hell was that going to happen, not that the passifist of a woman could do much to stop it. Starling might have gotten herself in a bit more of a predicament then she ever wanted, and now her fate rested with this interesting group.
River once more spoke up for her. “Little star must stay… your secret will help us all… and we will help you" Her words were so cryptic yet so reassuring, all Starling could do was smile at the girl. The more they spent together and the more River helped her out for well no apparent reason, the more Starling was liking her. Broken or not, she was human none the less. And Starling was always friendly afterall. She raised her brow as River began to chant and then say she must stay again. Such a friendly nice girl she was, preculiar of course but weren't they all in some shape or form? Afterall her own community thought she was insane, even her family. "Crazy little Starling" they always said to her. Crazy yeah, she'd show them some day.
Starling watched River disappear before seeing the captain return with another girl and a blonde man she could only assume was part of the crew already. But the way the Captain acted towards the man told her otherwise. This guy was not one of them just like Starling. Which made this whole trying not to be a burden even more burdenful. Taking two crewmen on for even a short amount of time for any group was very rare. She was warned by Zoe that this was out of her hands and so not to argue with the woman she nodded in agreement and smiled to the woman. "Fair enough. Thank you." The ride back with the mule was rather silent, Starling walked along side it with her eyes constantly darting around the area. Taking in things with somewhat suspicion and clutching tightly the bag she had at her hip. When they grew close to the ship her eyes widdened as they passed through and on. Wow a beauty of a firefly indeed.
Starling had made her way to the Mess area and was already meddling with what she found. Like always the way she did, she added dried objects to the bland assortment before taking the now more tasteful choices she had. She waited for any word but word didn't come fast enough. When she finished she made her way back the way she came only to hear the words of the Captain about her." Is that a fact…No way in hell... I just took on someone I didn't want and now there's another surprise? No!" She caught the butt end but knew they were talking about her. At that moment she stood silently near, in hardly any attention her way and listened to their words back and forth back and forth. She felt more like a trouble then anything and if wanted would be more than welcome to leave this ship as soon as could be. One thing was for sure, she didn't like being the burden anymore for anyone. And wow was there ever a debate because of her. In the end she would bunk with the mechanic girl until some place was cleaned. That suited her fine, heck she would bunch anywhere they could put up with her she wasn't very picky.
Suddenly an invitation was thrown her way and with a slight nod and a paranoid expression towards the other crew she smiled gently and followed them out. She would love to talk to River some more and when she arrived at the area she had followed River and Simon to she looked about. "River... I hope this doesn't seem a bit ungrateful but why did you want me around so badly? I mean..." she moved closer in and began to examine the interesting things in the room as she spoke. " I am very thankful you helped me. It was really important that you did and that I got away from those men..But you just met me..You don't know me. How can you trust me so easily?" its not that she wasn't trustworthy it was just a bit confussing to Starling. She was usually being pushed away by everyone and here she was being sucked in for the first time. Nice change indeed.

River had made her exit towards her room before Zoe ever made the decision that it would be a good idea that Starling would stay. In the long run, the girl didn't want anything to do with the decision if they were to decide Starling would go. How does she explain to a stranger that she just knows things... she just knows when things should happen which way.
Simon on the other hand, had changed his googly eyes from Kaylee which he held fondly in his mind... to Starling. Eyes sparkled as he looked at her, however, before anything he looked at Mal. "Captain, c'mon you of ALL people have to understand... River... she's adament about this. I don't mean childishly, I mean she is sure about this." That's when Mal and Simon began to argue... leaving Starling to go look for River on her own.
River was in her room, looking through pictures her brother had given her so she could remember things... but... remembering was hard, she had blocked out so much. A small index finger trailed over the picture of Simon and River playing cowboy and indians. She blinked a few times before the memory filled her head. "Simon... the primitives didn't have good aim like that..." "River we're just playing a game... plus you really think the indians had a bow like THAT" "Alright a ge..." *an arrow suddenly is stuck to her brothers nose by a suction cup* "The natives win" *an innocent smile by River before Simon's eyes widen and his arms stick out "Attack of the Zombies!" "Ahh!" Her head shook out the memory.
Obviously Simon had told Starling how to get to her room, because suddenly Starling was there, staring at River who still was looking towards her pictures. Eyes suddenly looked up towards the window as she listened for more movements from Starling."River... I hope this doesn't seem a bit ungrateful but why did you want me around so badly? I mean..." River suddenly turned towards Starling, head cocking to the right as she watched Starling look around the room. " I am very thankful you helped me. It was really important that you did and that I got away from those men..But you just met me..You don't know me. How can you trust me so easily?" River could see the confusion in Starling's face.
"I know I can trust you." And that was all she said. "Plus... Simon likes you." A grin spread over River's lips before her face became stoic once more, eyes turning back down towards the pictures. "Simon always watched over me... even though he's older, he always kept me company.... I remember being smart enough to do his homework when I was three... I don't remember much anymore... I know things though." Body turned so she faced Starling. "I know where your alliance will lie when the time comes." With this she stood and brought the pictures to Starling.

Wash shifted and shook his head. “Are we really sure this is wise. I mean, with the kind of trouble we get taking on passengers. The last ones we took on, never got off.”
Of course anyone but the new folk would have known what Wash meant by it. With the Tam’s as fugitives, them often running or getting into trouble. Wasn’t always the best place for someone who wasn’t looking for trouble.
“Should I be insulted that I've saved your lives before?”
“No Simon, I wasn't insulting, Just saying. But it was because of you coming on we almost lost Kaylee. And I’ve saved your lives to you know. Like oh…flying this ship.”
The Kaylee incident, Simon's jaw quickly tightened as he eyed Wash. However just as he was about to say something Malcom rose his voice. “ENOUGH! Wash get us ready for when we get off the rock. Kaylee … engine room.” Kaylee quickly grabbed Fox's hand, the gesture sending a redness through Simon's face to his neck.
"I'll be in my room, Starling you're more than welcome to come spend time with River..." however Simon quickly changed his mind and informed Starling how to get to River's room. Now, however, Simon would stare at his Captain blankly as he watched the man throw a tantrum. He knew who was in charge, hello the guy's name was Captain Malcom Reynolds.
Simon was far from stupid, and he didn't like that the tantrum that Mal was throwing made him feel quite the opposite. "Captain, c'mon you of ALL people have to understand... River... she's adament about this. I don't mean childishly, I mean she is sure about this." Malcom looked at the resident doctor with narrowed eyes. Malcom quickly moved towards the doctor, finger in the air and pointing it in the Doctor's face, mere blink away from his eye. "Anything goes wrong with her... and you and your sister are off this firefly WITH her. Got that doctor?"
Simon blinked and stepped back nodding sagely. "Yeah I got it Malcom... and she's going to stay with River then in her room... I'll start living in my quarters again." Which ironically was right across the small hall from River's room. "Hey Malcom..." Simon started as he was about to leave, "thanks for everything..." he cleared his throat quickly as he said that, heading to River's room.

After Simon informed her of where River's room was, Starling made haste there. Afterall she didn't want to cause anymore trouble then what she already had, so if she could get away from everyone then gosh darn it she was sure going to do just that. She took a few flights of stairs and a few turns before she made it. The ship was like a giant maginificant maze, and getting used to it was going to sure take some time.
Hoping she didn't take a wrong turn, she was pleasently pleased when she saw River in a room looking at some pictures. Thats when she entered and spoke, of course not without a soft knock first. Then came the answer from the girl, and a confused looked that swiped over Starling's face. But that soon faded as her eyes softened and she smiled brightly. " Thanks..for trusting me. You're the first to and its nice. Now If only the rest of you would" she moved to the girl and gave her a gentle hug before the remark about Simon liking her made her brow raise. "Well he is a nice man to from what I've seen. I like him to. I like all of you so far. Even your funny little Captain." she laughed gently before the girl began again. She became like a statue again as she did and that Starling began to take mental notes of.Watching every way she acted and spoke. So different, so interesting.
"Well I'm sure with a few jolts your memory will come back to you. And maybe I can find something to help with that too. It's good to hear he's a good brother too...I wasn't that fortunate. My family is just..." she shook her head gently and narrowed her eyes a bit. Seeming for the first time to grow a bit cold, but not to much. "They are the most ignorant bunch ever to live." she smiled then and looked back to River slowly. "But I still love em. Anyways...." she was about to speak but River coming to her with some pictures made her stop and look through them with her. Smiling at all the great pictures in there. " You two look really close. This must be hard on him to?"

She was very strange indeed and she could see it on the inside… but damnit all to hell if when she tried to talk it wouldn’t come out so cryptic. Why was she stuck in this shell of a human? She knew so much, she remembered so little… but she didn’t act human sometimes. Damnit. Eyes lowered to the pictures as she turned the pages-such a primitive way to keep pictures… but then again, Simon always loved to do things most people would call ‘out dated’.
She pulled out the hologram as well, and showed Starling a few home movies they had taken. It was a special thing to her, she hadn’t even shown Kaylee anything like this… well she had but not so quickly. In her mind… River could really trust Starling. “I trust you… and they trust me… they will trust you in time.” She nodded as she watched herself fixing her brother’s homework, which had been so long ago. She was just a child when she could do that… now… now she was reverted back to a childhood she never had.
Stopping for a moment when she heard her comment, River looked at Starling. “It’s the hardest on Simon… he knew me when I was different... and I was broken when he found me… he hurt inside for a long time. Yet he is my brother and he tries to fix me… I try to fix me… we will get through this.”
