At first he thought it hadn’t happened. There was little he found that could move him when he was going. But, it was about the speeds he was going. How the improbability of it, wasn’t adding up, that two would have collided in such a way. Clark was just glad to see the girl hadn’t been harmed because of him. That didn’t however stop the questions. Maybe it was because of how much time he’d spent around Chole, and the endless parade of questions the girl could develop. Even with the introduction of Lois. It must run in the family. Running a hand into the dark mess of hair Clark Kent paused for a moment watching the girl.
When he felt soft gasp holding his, it was easy to lift the girl. There was another smile from the boy as his weight shifted over the ground. “Nice to meet you too, Linda.”
He chuckled awkwardly at her comment about the hit. Features changed softly. A hint of worry perhaps. Mind mulled over the words to say to her, to explain to her. “I’m on the football team. You know, Smallville high.”
Silently his inner monologue was picking at him and his lame answer. Then the rational side of him kicked in, it was better that she know only that much. It wouldn’t raise any inquisition. Though as he looked into the face of this girl, it was like he felt something. It was hard to describe. Almost like a connection. Or a bad case of de’ja vu.
Hand was still holding hers before he caught the soft sound of her voice. But it was a whisper. Like she hadn’t meant to say it. Of course with superhearing, Clark picked it up. Jor-El. Did she just call him Jor-El? Emotions stirred within him as he let go of her hand. Did this girl he just met know something about him? Blue eyes turned over towards her as he stood silent for a moment. What if it was a set up, someone trying to find his secret. Who already knew enough to bring out the name Jor-El. His father’s name. Why. Came to his lips, but never came out. “W… I uhm. Well, I’m just glad you weren’t hurt.”
Questions of everything his father had said came to his mind. Of what he knew of Krypton. How it had been destroyed. How he was the last son of the planet. Still, how could this girl know anything about that. A weak smile came to his lips before turning some. “I live really close. If you wanted to…clean up. I could give you a ride home too. So your family doesn’t worry too much.”
This was really really odd. Something about this guy, he was so familiar. Like she had known him a very long time ago, but she couldn't place it. She couldn't figure it out. For a moment a glimmer of hope shone through her, perhaps it was Kal-El, her cousin? Maybe he survived? Maybe he landed on Earth and was now living a new life. No, it couldn't be. Krypton was destroyed, and so was everyone that occupied it. Even Argo city finally fell to its fate. No, she was the last survivor of Krypton. She was all that was left of its people.
But his eyes, his face, everything spoke of her Aunt and Uncle. Most of all her uncle. But he was gone right? This guy was very young, to young to be Jor-El. She had to forget it, had to for now. Even if she couldn't explain that funny fact that someone actually threw her back and did a slight bit of damage. Not much of one but a slight.
"AHHH Football. That sport always did amuse me." her smile only grew more. She had to play along, play normal. After all, the past and all she knew was dead, it was time to let it die and move on. " I mean..A bunch of guys in tights fighting over a small ball. Of course, I can't complain." she laughed gently before looking about the corn feild then down at her hands. Wow was she was mess. Her long hair which was once pulled up was now half done. And the ends were greyed just slightly from the previous accident. Her clothes, well, she would have to get somewhere else to fix that.
Suddenly a odd look came over Clark and she tilted her head slowly. Her own expression looking a bit curious and concerned at the same time. Apparently he recognized something she said, but the last thing she said was Jor-El. Did he know that name? If he did..how did he? It was time to investigate a bit into that, as best she could anyway. She was no spy that was for sure. "I'm glad I'm not hurt too" she smiled slowly, time to play cool.
"That would be great." a beam took over her face, her car was way back and right now from the collision she wasn't much feeling strong enough to get back there quick. She turned slowly and followed his lead through the feilds and back towards the house. Trying to make her movements as normal as possible. " Sometimes..don't you just wish you could fly to your destination. It would take so much less time to get there.." she wasn't really putting to anything, she was just trying to make idle talk.

Clark smiled once again. He always enjoyed smiling. There was just something about it. It was a good feeling. And he wanted anything to feel better then the awkwardness he felt now. Along with the slightest pang of sadness for a world he’d never known. Could never have known. Jor-El. His father, had sent him to Earth to protect him. But the way he’d come back into his life. In away that didn’t make Clark act like Clark. It was almost dark in away. And he didn’t want to feel that that was a part of him. That he was really Kal-El of Krypton. Supposed to live out some destiny here on Earth. A planet where he was strengthened by the yellow sun.
Of course even though that world had been destroyed, not all was lost. There was still what came with him. And still reminders of the planet. As well as physical evidence of it. The green meteor rocks. Their strange and alluring glow to most, held no side effects. For someone from that former planet. Well, it wasn’t pleasant. He could remember the first time he felt it’s powers. Draining him. Taking away his strength and life. Like his stomach was being ripped and turned inside out. That every vain in his body wanted to explode. The pain. It was slowly killing him. Now he learned to be more careful around things like that.
“Not that I like the tights. But, there’s something about it makes it more. I don’t know aerodynamic.”
He chuckled slightly looking back towards Linda. Still being unable to shake the feeling that he had. That at some point in his life he’d looked up into her face before. It was almost like. No. He couldn’t think of it like that. He was the only one left. Krypto wasn’t exactly family. But it helped. He noticed the look that came over Linda, with his own reaction to Jor-El’s name. Though the boy wasn’t sure. Perhaps she recognized the look on his own face about the name. That she knew something.
Head nodded the direction of Kent farm as he slowly started walking that direction. A soft breeze picked up as the stalks of corn danced along with in. How could he ask her. How did she know. Then he heard her voice behind him again talking about flying. Now it was like there was a chill against the nape of his neck. This was more than coincidence their meeting. “You have no idea. Sometimes it’s my biggest dream. Funny how we dream about flying huh. Wanting to feel that sensation.”
Clark shifted slightly, as well as his mind set. He’d have to be careful with what he said. Until he could find out more. As he pushed through the last stalks he point to the small farm house with lights on inside. “There we are. It looks like my mom’s home. Maybe even Lois. She might have something you could change into. And my mom’s a great at stitching things up.”

What if he was though? What if he was Kal-El, Or what if Jor-El had managed to find a way to put his body here on earth. To take the place of another in a home. No, it wasn't possible. Those eyes were more like Lara's. Jor didn't have blue eyes, soft blue eyes his were harder and dark. 'Come on Kara...give it up. Move on. Everyones dead ok' It was sad to think about it really, that nothing survived, nothing but herself, she wanted something else, someone else to have come down. If only. But that was not possible right? The planet was destroyed to quickly, no one had time to do anything...or was that true? Her father built a sheild...a sheild around her home Argo. Why did he? Why didn't her father tell at least her uncle and aunt...at least they could have come to survive with them. Why did he have to listen to those damn elders, they were family. They deserved to know that they could survive!
Now wasn't the time to become so angered at a man whom was already dead. Her father, her mother, everyone gone. It was always hard to believe, even after the 10 years she spent here, it was hard. Everything was always like some memory. It was sad really. How alone she felt. But this Clark, he made her feel not so alone. Like she would never be alone again, and that made Kara smile even more. All she knew was that hopefully, Green, Gold and Red Kryptonite was gone, forever gone.
Suddenly she laughed at his mentions of tights and their aerodynamic potential. " I suppose you're right. It is more flexible. But just admit it..you liked the tights." she smirked even more and nudged him gently. Why was she acting like this? Like he was some old friend she had known for many years and not just some stranger? Why did she feel so comfortable around him?
She followed closely enough behind but not to close. A breeze had come and it was much welcomed. For a split second she thought about the car, had the people been ok? In the distance she could hear the sirens and voices. She wasn't sure what they were saying yet, but she heard them. Good someone was helping them. Her mind traced back to Clark here. How can you explain the way she felt? How can you when you are just a stranger? When you've never met. " I've parachuted once before, but that deffidently could not compare to actually flying in the open. I think if I was a super hero, I'd want flight powers. To bad that doesn't exist eh?" 'Kara you are such a bad liar. Good try on covering up. ' Maybe he knew something. Maybe he had some answer. Maybe it was time to be bold. And ask him something. She was going to, but her eyes trailed up and she stared at the small farm house that came into veiw. It was beautiful, and quaint. "I like your house. It's really nice looking from the outside. I'm sure its even more on the inside." Her eyes saw the lights on, someone must have been home right? Suddenly she turned and couldn't help but put on a full smile. Ok, so she smiled alot, that was her nature. " Thank you so much Clark. I mean, We just met. I could be some nutty psycho girl for all you know, but you still offer me some help. You're a great guy. And I'm also thinking I would be very grateful to your mother or this Lois. If I went back to my grandmothers house looking like this, I think she would have a heart attack." she laughed very gently before following him towards the house.

"Nice meeting you Wally.... I'm with her so I don't know how the hell we have keys..." he laughed slightly before feeling her crook her arm in with his. He smirked and petted her hand gently before he was pulled towards the door, obviously Lois wanted nothing to do with this Wally fellow. Which was fine with him, this guy seemed cocky. Oh well.
"Oh good! Why don’t you take Wally with you, I’m sure he’d like to stretch his legs a little.” He saw her eyes fall and her entire body give up. Though Mrs. Kent smiled sweetly, Richard rose a brow.
"Well, Mrs Kent... I would love to take Wally with us... but Lois and I have a lot to talk about. There were a few things that happened and we need to catch up." His eyes turned to Wally. "I do hope that you don't mind, Wally... but this is very private things we need to talk about... if it weren't for that, I wouldn't mind you coming with, but for now... we need our privacy." He halfheartedly smiled- trying to give them the idea that what they had to talk about was obviously sad... which it was. "It was nice to meet you Mrs. Kent... Wally."
He exited the house with her on his elbow, whispering softly. "No matter what you do... keep walking. We need to talk." His arm opened the door of the car for her and let her get in before walking to the otherside and slipping into the drivers side. Starting the car, he looked to Lois. "Are you living with the Kents now?"

Wally grinned slightly while watching Lois before his weight shifted. Temporary house guest huh. “How come your not staying with your cousin then?” not that he mind of course here being there as well. Then there was the sound of the door opening again and Martha Kent came in talking to Lois before noticing him. “Nah, Miss Kent I just got in.” “So you’ll be staying with us then?” “Yeah…I mean Clark always said I had a place, ya know.” He tried to hide the small smirk as Mrs. Kent came up with the idea of him tagging along.
“I’m sure you have a lot to talk about.” He muttered under his breath as he leaned against the counter before looking over to Lois and Richard. He cleared his throat some with that big city, ‘I’m better than you’ vibe he was getting from them. But mainly from Rich even if he was trying to play nice around Mrs. Kent. Pushing off he followed some before they were close to the car. “Hey man I don’t blame ya. I mean I’d want some private time too if I found my girlfriend, or wait… was that –former- girlfriend…ah whatever, that I found her living in a house with two good looking guys.”
He shrugged as he hopped off the porch sneakers landing on the dirt. Arms folded back behind his head. “But I guess you haven’t met Clark yet. It’s like all the girls around him go ga-ga for him. So I wouldn’t want to step on toes, tagging along…welp” his arms came down and index and middle finger on both hands made quotations “Have fun… ‘talking’…”
“Yeah I am… Chloe’s place is a one-bedroom efficiency, it’s crowded enough there. Besides, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I get to go back to college. Aside from the friction between me and Clark, it’s been pretty tolerable. The Kents are really good people to let me stay here so I try to do what I can to help out. Granted I’m not out there driving the tractor, but I think the help I do around the Talon is alright.” Lois winked to Martha as she shared the private joke. Earlier in the month, Lois had tried to make breakfast and ended up burning the bacon and the toast, and getting enough eggshells in the omelets that they were a culinary hazard. Domestics never were her strong suit.
“Well you kids decide and let me know, I’m going to go freshen up. Lois did you remember to bring in the towels from the clothesline?”
“Linen closet, upstairs, Lois pointed toward the ceiling. “Dinner is at six thirty, if you’re staying. Oh and when you see Clark would you let him know?” With that the beautiful redheaded woman walked upstairs, leaving the teenagers alone.
Of course Lois had heard the first rude comment Wally made, but initially she listened to Richard’s calm lowered tone that she should just keep walking, ignore it… But once they were outside and he spoke more loudly and continued to push her buttons she was beginning to lose her resolve. “Am I… Would that bother you if I was?” She was defensive, lashing out irrationally at her ex because of how Wally had annoyed her. Her lips parted to continue the conversation with Richard when a blonde head leaned into her window and made his little comment complete with air-quotes. It was the last straw. Lois flung the passenger side door open with an angry growl, not bothering to close it as she closed the distance between herself and the obstinate jerk. “Just where do you get off-”
“-anywhere I can.” Wally said with a smirk cutting her off. Her eyes flared, “son of a-”
Anger had shut off her rational thought as she shoved the Flash in the chest with the heel of her palm. “Lois!” Richard blurted out as he exited the driver’s side.

Wally chuckled slightly “Because I could see you driving a tractor. You know, plowing over cows and corn.” There was just that air around Kansas, that home town feel, some times he liked it others he didn’t. But Smallville was smaller than Key Stone, but this was Kansas everywhere was small compared to thriving areas like Metropolis or Gotham. If they saw Clark, yeah…he could find him quick enough if he wanted to go racing around all of Smallville and the corn stalks. But well, he didn’t so he wouldn’t.
He could tell Lois was getting annoyed and not that he was really trying to make a bad first impression sometimes his mouth ran a lot faster than his brain did. And his rational thought that would have been saying 'Well I don't think that's so smart to say right now'. So the things he said were sort of him just running. He knew it was the last straw as soon as Losi shot him a glare and the door of the mustang went flying open. Wally backed away some “Just where do you get off- ” “ –anywhere I can.” The blonde steadied himself after the shove and he looked back up holding up his hands.
“Well if someone doesn’t have her knickers in a twist.” Lois shot him another glare looking about ready to deck him and he heard the other guys voice, but at the moment Wally didn’t care. It was going to be interesting living in the same house with this girl. “I was only trying to be non-misleading…I mean wasn’t it you who corrected me before?” The young Wally West moved in an arch watching Lois with brows raised. In a way he was right, she had corrected him.

“Don’t think for one second that you had any effect on my knickers.”
Lois flamed back, her eyes widening as she accentuated her words. She wanted to continue the argument, debate being something she thrived on, but the sight of Clark coming out from the corn with someone else made her shift gears. “Looks like your boyfriend is back… I’ll let you two catch up. have fun,” and this is where Lois inserted her own airquotes, “talking”.
Back in the passenger seat she strapped herself in and looked over to Richard. “Just drive,” she said with a lowered tone. It was all she could do not to look out the window at Wally, but she managed to keep her head straight. Once she and her ex were on the road, she spoke to him again, this time her tenor was apologetic. “I’m sorry about that. I never did have a good handle on my temper.”
Clark smile for a moment looking over towards Linda. Though there was still something about her, something he couldn’t shake. And the fact they were acting almost like long time friends. Most people in Kansas were nice. Like this? It seemed more that just small town hospitality. He laughed at her comment about the tights. Being around her was easy. Kind of like being around Chole. Hand ran into dark hair for a moment as they continued walking. Though he was paying attention.
For a moment he thought about asking her about why she’d said Jor-El. With the almost fishing questions. Flight. Super power. Did she really know something? Or was she just trying to lead him along until he gave himself up. His secrets. The ones it seemed people were always trying to find. “That’s cool. I’ve been on a plane before.”
Of course he had flown up there, to Lex’s private jet to get something back. Something that Lex shouldn’t have had. Part of the reason he was trying to use the journalism instincts Chole and now Lois were helping him gain.
“Yeah. It’s home.” The Kansas boy grinned again towards Linda as they started crossing over the dirt, and his super hearing picked up the tell end of a conversation. It sounded like Lois was mad at someone. Blue eyes darted up as the mustang pulled past him with Lois inside and she seemed to be ignoring him, and everything that had happened. “Lois?”
Clark continued on seeing a familiar face heading inside. Wally West. The only other person he’d met with powers. Well, save for Krypto. The dog came bounding out of the house, Clark didn’t doubt the dog could tell he was home. Scratching him behind the ears he continued. “Hey boy. Come on let’s go inside.”
Once inside Clark found himself face to face with Wally once again, the Kansas boy was grinning. With a hearty smack to Wally’s back he moved, after introducing Linda to him. “I’m going to go find my mom, and something for you to wear. Oh and Wally…behave.”
The dark haired youth found his mother in her room and closed the door behind him, lowering his voice. As he retold what happened in the corn fields. “How would she know his name, Mom? She said Jor-El under her breath. But I know I heard it.”
“I don’t know Clark.”
“ What if it was set-up. Maybe she knows something. About Krypton. My father. Me?”
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, sweetie.”
With a sigh Clark nodded his head, a pair of jeans and a simple white cotton tee shirt for Linda. As he walked down stairs he tried to look normal, like he hadn’t had that discussion with his mother. Extending the clothes to Linda he shifted his weight. “My mom said she can stitch you stuff up after dinner.”
He turned to Wally, he didn’t have to ask why he was here. He already knew. Some kind of trouble again in Metropolis. Cashing in on the open ended offer of a place to live. He was going to have to bring the second bed in from the barn for Wally, now that they’d given the guest room to Lois.

"Well it's a very nice home." her smile pulled even more than before as she stared out at the small farm. She had always spent her life in cities. Well, Argo was a grand city and with her adoptive parents it was more or less a suburan area and not really big. A picket fence, dog, the things every kid dreams of. But here it was a whole lot different. She hadn't seen her Grandmother in a while so she still wasn't used to the sights of farms and animals and livestocks and well cornfeilds.
Suddenly she could hear something coming their way. Her eyes turned towards a car that was speeding by, but she didn't listen in on anything they said. Inside the car was something that caught her off guard. It was the gentleman and lady that stopped earlier to help her on the side of the road. The two who are wondering why she was not dead and why she ran away from the scene of a crime. She couldn't stay at that scene, she just couldn't get caught. As they began to near the pair, Kara shifted her stance. She was behind Clark now, trying to hide from their sights. She knew what the authorities would do if they ever found out about her. She just knew. But the car sped passed them and that was a great sigh of relief.
She continued to follow him towards the house, still glancing behind her and not watching anything else, when suddenly a dog bounded up to Clark. She turned to see the creature and the look of worry that had taken her over was now gone. " Cute dog." When they arrived inside, her eyes instantly looking around, examining all the sights. It really was a nice place. She was introduced to Wally, whom's hand she shook and she beamed with a " Nice to meet you." before Clark was off.
He left her with this Wally and took a bit of a while to return. " Thank you" she reacted when he handed her the clothes. " Do you have a washroom I could use? If you don't mind." when she was directed she moved towards that sight. Changing into the jeans and tee that was leant to her and returning back after a few good moments.
"Oh..well I'll get these clothes back to you as soon as possible. I promise." she wondered if her Grandmother was worrying about her, if she was wondering why she hadn't come home yet. " Do you mind if I use your phone Clark?" she herself was getting a bit worried about the woman.

Now he was fed up with Wally… he saw in Lois’ eyes, so was she. His jaw clenched, the square frame of his jawline now perfected… he was pissed, and the red growing from his neck up was an obvious give-away. Eyes scanned Wally, he was taller than Wally, and that made him a bit happier.
Hey man I don’t blame ya. I mean I’d want some private time too if I found my girlfriend, or wait… was that –former- girlfriend…ah whatever, that I found her living in a house with two good looking guys.” Richard’s eyes never moved from Wally as he spoke, his jaw only-somehow- seemed to clench tighter. “But I guess you haven’t met Clark yet. It’s like all the girls around him go ga-ga for him. So I wouldn’t want to step on toes, tagging along…welp… have fun ‘talking’.” By then Lois and Wally began bickering-something he wasn’t willing to stand and listen to.
By now, Richard was fuming, his eyes-if they could have-would have been bright red, steam coming from his ears, the whole nine-yards…. But he was human, none of that could happen. Moving towards Wally he seemed to hiss his words as he spoke and grabbed Wally by the collar-however not even trying to pick him up. “I came here, because Lois was and still is my best friend…. And my brother just died, asshole. So if you don’t mind… we WILL go talk, and you WON’T be with us.” Letting Wally go he calmed a bit and seemed to dust Wally’s shoulder off.
“However, since your head is so far up your ass, I suppose you couldn’t find your way to town anyway.” Richard turned sharply and looked to Lois, eyeing her slightly, giving her his annoyed face. “C’mon Lois, I’m hungry and frustrated, anything outside of this farm will help me.”
Getting into his car he watched as they exchanged more bickering before she entered. “Just Drive” she demanded and he sped off. A few moments of silence before, “I’m sorry about that. I never did have a good handle on my temper.” More silence.
“I should have had a better handle on my own temper Lois… so don’t worry about it…. really.”

“Yeah sure. It’s just over here.” After showing Linda to the phone he headed to his room.Clark was trying to make ends meet in his mind. Having seen Lois driving off in a bad mood he figured Wally’s, rather unique, personality was more than likely to blame. Clark was trying to get everything settled. When he heard Wally’s voice from behind him, muttering something about the girls that seemed to be always present around the farm boy. A grin spread on his face as he turned around shrugging. “Maybe it’s the ‘guy-next-door’ thing?” “Are you sure getting girls to flock to you aren’t part of your powers, there Clarkie-boy?” Clark’s brows narrowed quickly towards Wally waving his hand at him. “Wally, don’t say that kind of stuff too loud…Lois uh, doesn’t know…only you. And of course my folks.” “Well Lois isn’t here…she huffed off with the suit.”
“Yeah, but Linda is downstairs.” He already had his questions about her. Trying to work their way out, he wanted answers too. But he also had a feeling Chloe knew and that sooner or later it was bound to come out. But he trusted Chloe. “So guess your bunking with me huh? Or can I fix you up in the barn.” “Har har, I didn’t know farm boys had senses of humor.” The tall dark haired boy moved past his blonde friend as they made there way back down to be social after giving the girl some time to call her grandmother and change. “Your welcome to stay for dinner Linda…since it looks like Lois isn’t going to eat with us.”
Deep down the questions wouldn’t rest however, he wanted to know what it was about Jor-El, about his father. What she was looking for. What she knew. Folding his arms he supported his weight against the counter top glancing across to his mother who was preparing dinner and then towards Wally. “Hey Clark we should totally get out of here tonight, go do something…” “Maybe we could all go into town to the Talon. I mean…it uh, never hurts to have some friends, specially here in Smallville.” The look in Wally’s eyes, Clark could tell he had, had a different thought. Wally meant out of Kansas, like the first time they started hanging out. California. Florida. Tonight probably wasn’t the best idea, but defiantly sometime in the future, the beaches, Clark smiled some at the thought.

She couldn't help but look at her reflection as she passed a mirror. Glancing to see how the shirt and jeans fit. Oddly enough they were a great pair, matching her size almost perfectly. Though slightly big around the hip area, but that was hard to tell. That pleased her, and her hair was a complete mess. As soon as she was done on the phone she would have to fix that up as well. She would put the long blond strands up within an elastic she happened to still have on her. Trying to at least look a bit more presentable. Although right now she was looking ten times better than about 20 minutes ago, and feeling much better too.
"Thank's again Clark." another friendly smile, as Kara picked up the reciever. She was very grateful for all of this, very much so, but somehow she was looking forward to getting back to her Grandmothers. It wasn't that she wanted to rush off or anything it was just that well, she met Clark maybe Fifeteen minutes ago and was thinking she might be over dueing her welcome. The feeling of staying more than you should is sure to unnerve anyone really. Her Grandmother unfortunatly never answered the phone, no the woman whom worked with her at the farm did. " Tell her I'm really fine Jezzie, and tell her I'm going to be home soon ok. And make sure she doesn't worry to much. She doesn't need to get any sicker. Ok...Thank's again." there was a click and she hung up the phone. Yes, she knew the woman would take care of everything and make sure that her Grandmother didn't worry to much, thankfully anyways.
She was slowly making her way back towards the kitchen, slowing down when she spotted a few picture frames that were hung on the wall and ones that sat on a table underneath. She leaned forward examining them carefully, staring at the happy family that looked back at her, all beams and smiles. That made herself laugh as she picked one up of Clark as a child and his parents, looking very happy indeed. After a second of taking in the image she placed it back down and was finally back in the kitchen, and just in time too.
Clark came back downstairs and told her she was welcome to stay for dinner. Dinner, how she could go for that right now, her stomach was aching for something to eat. " Thank you Clark, but I don't want to be more of a burden then I already have been. " " Oh Nonesense. You're not a burden at all, and we'd really like it if you stayed." his mother stated suddenly before Kara looked towards her. She hesitated before speaking in a soft tone. " Well...I can't argue with that I guess. But only as long as you will allow me to help you." she had moved towards the counter that the woman was chopping and preparing food on. Grabbing the peeler she began with the potatoes. Not even giving the kind woman a change to shoo her away.

Lois’ weight shifted a little as the car traversed over the poorly maintained country road. It had been almost ten minutes of silence between them and her temper was still nowhere near settling down. Internally, Lois was yelling at herself. A drill sergeant with the voice of her father who echoed the things she was vexing over. ‘You aren’t mad at Richard so why are you taking this out on him?’ – ‘Why should one smacked ass ruin a little catch up?’ – ‘Just suck it up.’
“I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but… did you really come out here just to tell me about Jerry?” The car bumped again as the road gave way from the uneven gravel of the Rural Route to the smooth asphalt of town. “You could have just called,” she offered a tight smile, “You wanna turn left here…” Lois picked at the cuticle of her thumb knowing that she was bringing up tough topics.
That was always her way; Never one to beat around the bush or shy from the big question. It had been her assignment to play big sister and surrogate mother to her sister, to maintain an ordered household that her father approved of… and in order for her to do that she had to learn how to ask and do things that no one at her age should be expected to do. “Did you want to go to the Talon? The coffee is phenomenal for a small town on the edge of civilization and I can assure you it’ll be light on your wallet.”
